Elu is from Ada Hoffman's The Outside and The Fallen He is post-The Fallen for anyone canon familiar.

For anyone not, Elu is from a time sometime after 2400, when most of humanity has left Earth after what they called the Morlock War when a portion of humans rebelled againast their AI gods with the help of an AI just looking to desatroy humanity. The Gods prevailed and took total control of humanity, limiting their technological growth so that humans could never surpass them, nor replace them. Humansstill have access to plenty of advanced tech, mind you, but it's all built and controlled by the Gods--humans understand very little of it mechanically. To keep humans in check, any technology or knowledge that could threaten the Gods is deemed heresy, and possessing or seeking such can lead to severe punishment by the God who punishes and who takes the souls of the damned into herself--Nemesis.

The Gods are aideds by the humans they have elevated to something beyond mortal by way of advanced cybernetics--their angels. Elu is one such angel, bound to Nemesis, until he rebelled for love of his superior in the angelic hierarchy--Akavi Averis--and fell. Now, he's seeking a way to escape the angelic forces he knows will eventually find and destroy him, while helping heretical humans the Gods and angels have abandoned to the mystetious forces from the realm known to them only as The Outside.

Tosased aside by the angel he risked his soul for, Elu is struggling to find his place in the universe and who he is without the rigid role that has defined him for over 50 years. No longer quite human, no longer really an angel, cut off from the inner cyber-newtwork he's depended on for decades, he's something like the Old Humans, stumbling around in the dark before the Gods arose to lead them into the light.
